I grew up in the town between the city and the country
The California boundary
I was a little boy in a middle class family
At the end of the century
And my daddy worked at a very good company
With benefits and a salary
So we wanted for nothing

The American Dream
Was I a little too free?
Did I have it too easy?
Maybe

Well I never knew that life out in the country
Where they work hard to make their money
But I knew the taste of milk and honey
In my suburban luxury
And now I’m trying to live in the heart of the city
Where the lights are so pretty
But the pace is a frenzy
And I’m not strong as I need to be

I almost wish that I’d seen
A bit more struggle and need
Cos now my living ain’t as free
As it used to be
